9 Tips For The Overwhelmed Non-designer

Wanting to build a brand but have no clue where to even begin? Girl, I’ve been there and I understand. Believe it or not, I have zero background in graphic design yet somehow I managed to DIY my way through creating an incredible website, brand, and company. If you’re feeling overwhelmed like I was, just relax. If I pulled it off you can too my sweet friend.

1 | CHOOSE A COLOR PALETTE

Your color palette is your brands first impression. Think of it like an outfit. What outfit do you want your dream customer to see you in when you first meet? Ideally, I recommend having 5 colors or less in your color palette. Still have no idea where to start? Hop on Pinterest and search “color palettes” and gather some inspiration!

2 | PICK 3 FONTS

You want people to see your brand and instantly know it’s YOU without even having to think. Using 3 fonts helps your audience begin to recognize and remember you. Doing this gain trust as a brand as well. Using just a few fonts on a regular basis builds brand loyalty keeps customers coming back for more!

3 | TAKE HIGH-QUALITY PHOTOS

Maybe you’re not a professional photographer. I get that. Taking high-quality photos is HARD and it’s a big time commitment. But, I know you can do it. All you need is an iphone and some natural light (from a window!) to start out. Make sure to take all of your photos at the same time of the day so they look cohesive. If you’re still nervous about this, take a deep breath. Just download the acolorstory editing app and you’ll be all set!

4 | MATCH BRAND TO AUDIENCE

Here’s an example. Let’s say you want to be a wedding photographer. You’re in the early stages and you don’t have a logo or website yet, but you know who your audience is (brides-to-be!). Make sure to choose colors, fonts, and styles that have a feminine, light, and airy aesthetic. The last thing you want to do is have a black and orange logo. Those colors would attract the wrong audience.

5| LESS IS MORE

White space is your friend. Don’t ever feel like you have to put a ton of words everywhere on your website, business cards, or any other marketing materials. The less you write the more clean and professional your brand is going to look. Practice writing less words while still saying what you need to say.

6 | USE CANVA

For everyone who has no idea where to start when it comes to social media and blog graphics, Canva is for YOU. I get it, design is intimidating but with Canva it isn’t. The interface is so simple and you can just choose from their collection of designs and photos and easily make whatever graphics you need!

7 | STICK TO ONE STYLE

One of the biggest things I struggled with when creating Grace Kindly was remembering to stick to one style. Even though I would love to sell other hand-lettering styles, bold prints, and unique designs, it’s not really the best idea. Being consistent with a lettering style and product style is paramount when it comes to having a strong brand. It’s how you are recognized! So I leave the fun crazy lettering projects for my spare time.

8 | FIND YOUR VOICE

What is your mission. What do you want to accomplish with your brand? Answering that question will help you find your voice. Grace Kindly is a brand that is based on encouraging other women so my brand voice is one of encouragement. Some brand voices are more authoritative, some use humor, some use excitement. Whatever you decided your brand voice is, stick to it!

9 | HAVE 2 LOGOS

This has only come about in the past five years because of social media. Having one main logo and one logo icon is really important. Just scroll through instagram and you’ll see the companies you follow all have two logos. For example: Target uses the bullseye as their icon and then their main logo is the word target spelled out in all caps. This helps your brand stay consistent and recognizable throughout all internet platforms.

I know all this information can be intimidating. Just take it one step at a time and before you know it, you’ll have a brand that you love and are proud of.

Remember, “God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.” (Mark Batterson). God has already given you everything you need to succeed, all you have to do is just trust Him and yourself.
